Your AC is Likely Repairable

While air conditioning problems are inconvenient, they aren’t always catastrophic. AC units are quite resilient and can last up to 20 years with several repairs throughout their lifespans. We have diagnosed and performed every air conditioning repair you can imagine at Queen B Plumbing.

Many people understandably worry that they must replace their AC when something goes wrong. Luckily, that’s not often the case, and we can repair many common AC problems, such as:

Musty Odors

The last thing you want is for your air conditioner to spread musty odors throughout your home. It can be off-putting, but most of the causes of musty AC odors are easy to diagnose and repair. Our team can inspect your air filter, drain line, and air ducts to find the root of the musty smell.

A clogged drain line can create a musty smell as the drain pan overflows and spills out. This can eventually cause mold to grow, and that explains the musty odor. We also frequently find mold and mildew in air ducts that haven’t been cleaned in years.

musty AC odors

That’s why we recommend you get your air ducts cleaned every 3-5 years, or as needed. Otherwise, the musty odor may simply come from a dirty air filter that you haven’t replaced in a while. That’s the easiest fix as we can simply replace the filter.

Insufficient Airflow

Insufficient airflow throughout your home is often caused by the same culprits as musty odors. For example, clogged ductwork or a dirty filter can make it hard for air to pass through the vents. Not only does this weaken the airflow, but it can also strain your AC.

If that’s the cause of the weak airflow, our team can inspect your blower motor. Blower motors don’t always last for the lifespan of the AC. Unfortunately, blower motors aren’t typically repairable, so we must replace the part.

Your AC Leaks

Air conditioning units are prone to two types of leaks: water and refrigerant. Water leaks are much easier to repair as they are typically caused by clogged condensate lines. Your AC is vulnerable to dirt, dust, and debris that can eventually work its way into the condensate line.

Luckily, we can unclog your condensate line, so it effectively removes water as your AC runs. Refrigerant leaks are more serious and require immediate attention. That’s especially true if you have an old AC unit that uses R-22 freon as it’s dangerous and bad for the environment.

Refrigerant leaks happen because of corrosion, and they are common in old AC units. This is often repairable, but we may have to replace the unit if the corrosion is too severe.

The Air Isn’t Cold

It’s quite disappointing when you crank the AC on a hot New Jersey summer day and no cold air comes out. This is a problem we handle a lot at Queen B Plumbing, and there are several ways to repair it depending on the cause. For example, the capacitor may be shot, and that’s something we likely must replace as they aren’t typically repairable.

The blower motor can’t start and circulate cool air without a working capacitor. Dirty coils can also stop cold air from blowing. Luckily, we can clean them in most cases, and that’s an easy, common air conditioning repair.

Evaporator coils can freeze when they become too dirty. This can stop cold air from blowing and it can also freeze the condensate line. Eventually, this can create the perfect conditions for mold to grow in the drain pain and other parts of your HVAC system. Call us right away if cold air doesn’t blow when you run your AC so we can catch the problem early.

Inconsistent Cycles

Does your AC start and stop after only a few minutes? Inconsistent cycles sometimes are common for ACs that are 15-20 years old as they weaken over time. However, short cycles can happen at any age if your AC’s thermostat sensor is faulty.

AC thermostat sensors are just as vulnerable to dust and debris as evaporator coils, which they are right by. Your AC cannot properly communicate with the thermostat once the sensor fails. This will cause short cycles and inaccurate thermostat readings.

We also see short cycles occur because of faulty thermostats. Both of these problems are simple, inexpensive air conditioning repairs that we have lots of experience with.
